Beyond the Core

This chapter presents selected topics that are beyond the core of VB. Some of these topics are included because of programmers’ practical needs, while the others are intended to open the door for the beginner to explore how VB’s power can be extended beyond the level he (she) can currently imagine.

The chapter begins with an introduction to techniques for persisting application settings. Both the Windows registry and the My.Settings object are briefly introduced. Section 14.2 introduces topics dealing with using the Microsoft Office suites in VB. There, you get to see how other software systems can be used to extend the power of VB. The remainder of the chapter presents ASP.NET for rapid development of web applications. Most of the applications that you will develop in the future will either directly or indirectly involve the web. This introduction should pave the way for you to further explore into web programming.
